The Paul Dukas Institute is founded in the spirit of mentorship, reflection, and artistic integrity embodied by Paul Dukas (1865–1935). While best known for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Dukas’s most profound influence lives on through his teaching — his ability to nurture individuality while cultivating discipline, imagination, and intellectual depth.
Our vision draws inspiration from the fin-de-siècle Parisian salons where musicians, composers, and thinkers gathered in conversation and collaboration. The 1903 photograph of the “Trio” concours (Érard Prize) captures this spirit perfectly: artists such as Claude Debussy, Paul Taffanel, Pierre Lalo, and Paul Dukas himself sharing music not in rivalry, but in a space of dialogue, listening, and mutual respect.
The Paul Dukas Institute seeks to revive that same atmosphere of intimacy and connection — where learning is personal, communication is central, and artistry grows through shared exploration.
Dukas’s classroom was, as Elsa Barraine later recalled, “not merely a class in composition or history, but a place where philosophy, poetry, and ethics met music — where one learned to think before writing a note.” His students emerged not only as composers but as artists shaped by reflection and moral imagination. Among them were some of the most distinguished voices of the twentieth century: Manuel de Falla, whose sense of form and expressive restraint Dukas helped crystallize during his Paris years; Olivier Messiaen, who inherited Dukas’s fascination with color, symbolism, and structure; Elsa Barraine, who carried forward his intellectual rigor and humanistic ideals; and Joaquín Rodrigo, who sought Dukas out after hearing of his profound mentorship, later crediting him with refining his artistic vision and compositional clarity.
The Dukas Institute aims to inherit this inspiration — to carry forward Dukas’s holistic vision of art, thought, and humanity into the modern age. Through a fully remote format, we offer music performance lessons, theory and musicology seminars, and special events led by renowned musicians and scholars. Our programs cultivate musicians who think critically, listen deeply, and create with purpose — embodying Dukas’s belief in pedagogy as a living art.
We aim to inspire a global community of musicians united by curiosity, collaboration, and a dedication to artistic excellence.
